As stated earlier, new products and services are thoroughly checked before being released to the public. However, the majority of these assessments are focused on results. Only when there has been a significant breach or defect in a similar product, or when there are strategic reasons, then the reliability of a system is usually questioned. The Huawei case is an obvious example of the latter, while the Uber self-driving car accident is an example of the former. Setting cybersecurity standards is one way to improve the reliability of modern devices and digital services. Setting cybersecurity standards is a risk prevention and, where applicable, risk reduction strategy. It is a preventative measure taken before a potentially dangerous incident happens.
In any case, as we move faster with 5G and become more linked across the Internet of Things, cybersecurity threats will skyrocket. Other emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, would provide cybercriminals with new tools.

Customers, government agencies, and technology companies are all collaborating to make emerging innovations more secure. States all over the world are developing national cybersecurity policies. Following that, cyber task forces/institutions are established to combat malicious attacks against state infrastructures. Big tech companies are working to secure the servers on which we all rely by ensuring that their hardware is secure and that their software is updated on a regular basis. Additionally, companies of all sizes, as well as individuals, are implementing a variety of cybersecurity initiatives, ranging from recruiting hundreds of IT analysts to deploying the most up-to-date antivirus software.
While these efforts are important, they are not matching up with the rate of technological advancement and the growing number of potential cybercrime breaches. The limitations of these cybersecurity initiatives are determined by the way civilian infrastructures and malicious cyber actors operate.
Civilian infrastructures are more vulnerable to cyberattacks than military infrastructures due to the latter’s lack of digital connectivity. By definition, Civilian infrastructure (private or public) is more available to the general public. Because of the connectedness and usability of these infrastructures, as well as the growing number of connected devices, finding and patching all potential breaching points is difficult. Furthermore, even though all of a company’s security flaws are fixed, the environment in which the company is located cannot be protected. Although large corporations may devote adequate resources to their IT departments, this may not be the case for all of the SMEs with whom they do business. Although small businesses are targeted in 43 percent of online attacks, just 14 percent of those targeted have adequate cybersecurity capabilities.

The required amount of manpower is a second constraint. Around the world, there is a wide and rising demand for cybersecurity analysts. According to a 2019 ISC2 report, the global cybersecurity workforce counts 2.8 million people. According to the same report, there is still a shortage of 4.07 million cybersecurity experts. With the rise of the Internet of Things, this chasm is only going to widen.
